En 1979 cuatro blancos que se hacían llamar Fat Boys se abrieron un hueco dentro del underground neoyorkino con una explosivo cocktail de hip hop, guitarras distorsionadas y arreglos jazz. Aquél era el primer embrión de los que hoy conocemos como Beastie Boys.

Comenzaron tocando hardcore punk en sus primeros discos, pero más tarde comenzaron a experimentar como pioneros del hip hop y el rap, convirtiéndose en referencia fundamental de los mismos. También han editado discos basados en el funk y el jazz y no es infrecuente que en sus discos de hip hop incluyan algún momento de rock o punk o algún corte acústico. También son conocidas las actividades de Turntablism y de producción musical de sus miembros.

El grupo está compuesto actualmente por Adam Yauch (MCA), Mike Diamond (Mike D) y Adam Horovitz (Adrock), aunque otros músicos han formado parte del grupo: Kate Schellenbach (batería) y John Berry (guitarrista) habían formado parte antes al grabar su primer disco, el hardcore punk "Pollywog Stew" en el sello independiente punk Ratcag Records en 1981.

Ya hasta el 85 y tras varios cambios en la banda, tocaron en infinidad de clubs hasta que en el 86 telonean a Madonna en el tour por Estados Unidos de Like A Virgin. Su debut discográfico, Licensed To Ill (86) con la formación oficial de Mike D, Ad-Rock y MCA es la primera grabación de hip hop que alcanza el número uno en las listas americanas. Todavía hoy se recuerda como un hito en la historia de la MTV aquel trozo de metralla, "Fight For Your Right”, incrustado en los televisores de miles y miles de adolescentes que se veían representados por primera vez por aquella vuelta de tuerca de un género, el hip hop, territorio casi exclusivo de los afroamericanos. En el 89 cambian Los Angeles por Nueva York y con la producción de Dust Brothers publican Paul's Boutique un disco lleno de samplers que les sirve para experimentar con las primeras ideas de lo que es su obra magna: Ill Communication (1994) en el que rehabilitan la estética setentera -tienen olfato hasta para eso- al ritmo de Archie Sheep, Jimmy Smith, Bob Marley y grooves tan infecciosos como juguetones.
Su ultimo disco de estudio es The Mix-Up grabado a finales del 2007.
